KUALA LUMPUR – Coldplay’s upcoming Kuala Lumpur concert should be banned due to the band’s support of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community, said Pahang Mufti Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Osman.
Rahman cautioned Muslims against attending the concert if it promotes LGBT agendas as it would contradict religious tenets.
“We Muslims, as in the word of God, (which translates to) ‘are the best people, inviting people to goodness and forbidding kemungkaran (defiance of God)’,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysia Gazette today.
“If the matter is clearly inviting people to the LGBT agenda and forgetting God, we must stand firm against it.”
He said the concert could have been accepted in a multiracial nation if it was an event without LGBT elements.
“If it has aspects of ‘immoral actions,’ the concert could negatively influence Muslims and non-Muslims alike, as most religions are against it (LGBT practices).
“There isn’t a need for that (the LGBT community) for Muslims. Actually no one likes the LGBT community.”
He also blamed the concert organiser for not seeking prior consultations, claiming that no religious scholars, or ulama, and individuals would support such a concert being organised in a Muslim country like Malaysia.
“I feel it is better to have efforts to cancel (the concert). (If) certain parties have the power to cancel the concert, it would be better. We are a Muslim nation.”
Moreover, Rahman said Malaysia should emulate Qatar, the host of the recent FIFA World Cup.
Tickets to Coldplay’s concert were sold out in a few hours, causing the ticketing website to crash due to high demand.
Several politicians, including PAS central committee member Nasrudin Hassan, urged the cancellation of the concert, claiming that it would only promote hedonistic values and deviant beliefs.
However, Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming said Malaysia still welcomes Coldplay and that PAS members can simply not attend the concert.
